I recently built a rack for my collection as well and all I used was some 4' shop light set ups. I put a 60 watt plant light and a regular wjite light and my plants are growing like wild fire. Ran me about $17 per shelf. Everything is on timers so all I have to do is enjoy the show basically. If you would like a pic let me know and I will see what I can do for ya.

How do you guys do these things so cheaply? My light coasted me around forty dollars; what's your secrete?

Did the 4 foot shop light that you bought have an electronic ballast in it? Because I am wondering how the ballast would be able to light a 60 watt bulb. Those shop lights can only handle 40 watt bulbs unless they have electroinc ballast and in which case I want to know where you got the light.

You are correct they are 40 watt bulbs. Either a typo or a brain fart in the earlier post. But like I was saying the set up is working great. That is 80 watts over 4-10 gallon tanks. Plenty of light. I bought the shop lights, (9.99) at K-mart with the ballasts in them and then I got the bulbs (reg. bulbs 2 for $6 and the plant lights 2 for $9)at Home Depot. It is working great for me so far. Much cheaper than the $120 metal hlide bulbs I was buying for my Reef tank.

Ya I use a 65 watt powercompact over my 4 - 10 gallon tanks. Works great as well. Just costs more.

I use the 4 foot lithonia shoplights and they work great if you have the right bulbs. I use the full spectrum bulbs sold at home depot. So with the light which is 7 and the bulbs which are like 4 each i only spen about 15 bucks on each set up.
