I thought the readers of this forum would enjoy seeing a piece of bull snake history. You are looking at a scan of an authentic 143 year old print of a bullsnake (not a reproduction). The print accompanied an 1860 US government report of an exploration of the western United States. The old Latin name Pituophis sayi was used in the text. The piece was created by well known 19th century artist J.H Richard. He was known for his attention to detail and ability to arange his subjects so that a variety of scales (dorsal, lateral, ventral, caudal, etc.) could be seen by the viewer in one beautiful image. The fine detail of of Richards' work cannot be fully appreciated on a computer monitor and of course, the protective watermark is NOT on the original print. I hope you enjoyed seeing it.
