Jacksons cycle in Hawaii

TylerStewart Dec 08, 2003 10:30 PM

I'm wondering if any of you know the stage in the reproductive cycle of the Jacksons in Hawaii in April. I'm supposed to be going there this coming March or April and I'm gonna take some time to check out the Jacksons and take some pics. Does anyone know when the babies are generally dropped (time of year) and what size Jacksons I should expect to see? I know it's not a huge winter/summer difference, but it is a difference so I would think it happens at a certain time. Thanks!

I lived there for 3 years. I don't remember there being an actual season for baby jacksons. I remember finding babies and jacksons of all ages/sizes throughout the year.
Something to consider: You can obtain a permit from Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources (DLNR) to import up to four animals per household for personal use. That's if you want to bring in some Hawaiian Jackson Chameleons.
Contact info:

I believe you have to physically be in Hawaii to obtain this permit, but I would suggest giving them a call ahead of time to check if they're still issuing permits. Also, you may need to check with the airlines you're using. They may not allow you to bring the cham onboard.

babies of jacksons are acually born almost year round....but most tend to be born early in the year about when you are going...!!!

anyways you will have to look pretty hard to find some babies uless people in the town let you look around their house since they will uaully find a cham on the road and take to their house to keep bugs away.

Ok thanks for the replies. I'm excited to go. I've got a friend here who is Hawaiian and has lived there from birth until 2 years ago and he knows all about where to look and how to find them. He didn't know about my other question though. I'm gonna take alot of pics and make a little research trip out of it. I had also read that you can bring back 4 Jacksons.... What if the airline won't let me? Can't you put them in as cargo? I don't suppose shipping them would work...? Is that more than a 1 day deal? If I did bring some back, I'd probably be looking for babies and maybe a gravid female if I thought I found one. Thanks again.

Did you read my reply Tyler? There was some contact info there on where to get required permit to bring back Jacksons.
Check with the airlines if they allow lizards as carry-ons. Worst case scenario would be to ship them. You can ship USPS overnight. They should be okay, but exercise caution.
BTW, practically all wild female Jacksons that you come across will be gravid. Choose females that aren't TOO fat. That will give them more time to get acclimated to their new surroundings before delivery, and it will reduce stress on future babies. I wouldn't reccommend trying to bring back babies, as it might be too stressful on them.

The airlines will not allow you to take any animal other than a small companion dog or cat in the cabin. You can get it shipped animal cargo on your flights for most airlines though. For US Airways, it will need to be shipped "PDQ shipping." You will need to call your airline's cargo department and find out the policies and how to go about doing it. It costs $85 dollars on US Airways. I don't think you can do USPS with these guys from Hawaii because you will need to declare them to the agents when you leave the state (thats why you need the permits). Otherwise, people could just send them USPS all day long. Call the authorities in Hawaii and ask them what the regulations are. Then call your airlines.

The USPS may or may not allow shipping of chameleons through mail. It depends on weather and other factors. Whether local regulation disallow the shipping of chameleons is another thing. Either way, check with the local authorities in Hawaii!

I know for a fact that both USAir and UNITED will ship chameleons and other reptiles via their cargo service. This is the way i got my chams and torts to PA from California. They flew out the same day and arrived the same day as I did. All I had to do was wait around the airport for the flight they came in on. I bought some "Critter Keeper" plastic cages at my local pet store and packed them in there (one to a cage) and put them in a Cardboard box with pieces of foam that I bought at walmart and cut up to hold the cages from moving around. The shipping cost me $80.00 and i did not need any permits (US AIR) from California to PA. Coming from Hawaii, you will need an export permit from the local authorities. Use Victor's info and give them a call. I also had to give the airlines at least 7 days reservation for the animals and the approximate weight. US Air charges $80.00 for up to 50lbs so you can stuff as much in there as you want to make up the 50 lbs.

Hope this helps....I would not use DELTA as they gave me the run around when I called (I was shipping a Sulcata Female) and they wanted all sorts of health permits even though she was CB and not WC.

An yet another story....this one is very interesting in itself as I see a LOT of misinformation about Jacksons and Chameleons in themselves....fun reading:
