BCI/BCC Housing.........

labialpitstop Dec 08, 2003 10:50 PM

I recently fell in love with a BCC and have been doing some research. I came across a book that said that a BCC could be housed in a 4ft/3ft/3ft cage. Is that true??? I know that they are not exactly all that active but isn't that REALLY small for something that can reach 12ft? I thought that was a little strange so I wanted to get a few other opinions. How are their dispositions when they age? Are they a bit unmanageable due to their size/weight? Again, I want to get as many opinions as possible before I buy a snake that will get longer than I am!

(oh yeah, one more thing, I was told that they darken in coloration as they age, is this true?)

I think you have to be careful to which snake specimen you refer to, as I think it is very rare that they reach 12ft, more likely 8-10.

Standard methods say an inclosure for the snake should match to around 2/3length by 1/3 width. For a Hogg Island or Arabesque or other small variant then 4X3X3 could work fine. It will take two years before you need an enclosure of this size.

I know that this must be a pet and you want to provide good housing. The recommendations are always minimums. Still, I know breeders keeping them in smaller tubs.

What kind of enclosure are you planning on? Plastic, Wood, Glass Aquarium, A Tub (Rubbermaid/Sterilite etc.)

I was actually planning on building my own. A freind of mine has made some really classy cages out of mallanine and glass, pretty cheap/sturdy too. I was thinking about 6/3/3 or even 8/3/3. Not sure yet. I will have to take this one into carefull consideration, I want to have enough room to provide this guy a good home. I would rather have a couple of snakes that have great homes that a bunch of snakes that have the bare essentials. Thanks!!
