growth speed of corns

twbillings Dec 09, 2003 03:01 AM

I just got my first snake, a snow corn. This is not my first herp however. I just wanted to ask a couple of questions. How fast will my corn grow? How long till it can breed? How do I sex it? And is there any other things I need to know about them? I have had my for close to 3 weeks now and it is doing fine, eating well. I will try to get pics up soon.

Your snake's growth is dependent on how much and how often you feed it.

My yearlings are about 30 inches long and 150-170 grams. My 2001 snake is 39 inches and 270 grams. This is just an example. Some people will end up with smaller or larger snakes if they feed their snakes at a different pace than the way I feed mine.

Its true about the growth rate, hatchlings are affected enormously by how often and how much you feed them. Its my experience that sometimes when you buy snakes from breeders who have a LOT of snakes, they are much smaller than what you expect. Due to the expense of feeding lots of snakes, they feed in lesser amounts less often. This past fall I bought an adult mexican milk from a larger breeder that is supposed to be two yrs old this spring, she is only about nine inches long! Also bought another milksnake that is going to be three yrs old and is wayyyyyy smaller than I would have expected. My yearlings are about the size of the person's in the preceeding post. We feed the hatchlings a pinky every 4 days or so to begin with and after the first couple sheds, bump it up to two a wk, sometimes three if they want it. They grow quickly and are healthy and beautiful. Remember, this isn't true of ALL large scale breeders, I have received lovely strapping hatchlings and older snakes from big time breeders too, just an observation on some snakes I have bought.
