PTS slugs again

J-Cal Dec 09, 2003 07:59 AM

I used to be fairly active on this board, but with school and such this year I havent been on much...glad to see its still active

This time last year I found 2 large orange slugs in my PTS enclosure. The was approximately 1 year after I had gotten my pair. I was surprised today to find another set, and rather depressed at my lack of success. Over this year I've collected several more PTS and im considering trying to figure out if its my female or male thats infertile. The problem is, I am not sure which one is which. Here's the problem (ill add some pics tonight if i have time). I saw them breed last year...kinda. I saw one (cammo) grab my female (fat boy, mainly cuz it looked male to me when i first got it) and stroke its sides, spin tails, but i never saw any hemipenes on either on. Ive heard people say females can entice males to breed. The "male cammo" is very active and aggressive, but its body shape is as female as it gets to me. It has a very small circular head with a more pear shaped body and very fat reletive to its head. The other one has always remained skinnier, but healthy, with its body the same width as its head. When i found the slugs they were still wet and cammo was right there. It kinda flipped out when i opened the cage too. "He" looks a little skinnier to me too. I just dont know what to do

As a side note I have a female that i KNOW has given birth before, but cammo is mean to it. should i try switching cammo and it to see what happens (so long as they get along)?

Hello,

Due to the fact, this is an endangered species in the wild, By all means try a neutral venue reintroduction to faciliate breeding. You might want to check in addition to temperature and humidity, proper air circulation. This seems to have a profound affect on this species for reproduction to commense.
Any slugs you have- try to photograph and freeze. In additon to myself, other individuals such as Dr. Balsam may be able to deduce from such evidence the cause and the 'Cure'.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,
Brian
