how long can you keep frozen food in the freezer?

I do not keep frozen rodents longer than 2-3 months. Especially with the smaller sized rodents, they become freezer burned.

can it pass any germs to my regular house frozen food?

like any other foods (all foods can pass germs, bacteria, etc.), as long as they are packaged properly you will not have a problem. I dedicate one shelf to just rodents until I get my new freezer that will be used for only rodents.

how long does it take to defrost?

This depends on size and how you go about defrosting. Some people leave them on the counter for a few hours. Mind you this is NOT A GOOD IDEA. After 4 hours all sorts of bateria WILL start to form that can kill and/or make your snake sick. I personally put them in a big tub of hot water. I wait about 10 minutes, dump the old water out and fill it again. I do this for a few reasons. 1) so the food will defrost quicker 2) the food will be warm just like a live animal. This tends to work more for younger snakes. Established adults in most cases do not care.
***I know what you are thinking, go ahead and try the microwave, you will only do it once......lol***

were is the best place to get some?

You can find rodents right here on KS under the feeders section of the classifieds. Other than that, maybe someone in your area will respond and give you a tip on a local person.

Best of luck!

how long they last will depend on how they are sealed and stored. I food saver vacuum seal mine and they last months. just having them loose in a bag is gonna open them up to freezer burn more quickly.

I don't see how they could pass on germs really. I do keep mine in one half of the chest freezer. I have a tolerant family.

defrosting depends on how big and how many and how you thaw them. I thaw them in warm water and the biggest thing is the occasional medium large rat....they take time. A mouse, warm water.....an hour or so...if you change out for new hot it is faster.

I grow my own so I don't buy online. Some love Rodentpro, someone else I know likes BigCheese.

they have packed different numbers for me in the past. It is only when you order on their webpage that you must order in those amount. I ended up ordering odd numbers of the different sizes. The only problem with ordering small is that you still have to pay shipping, and it can double the cost, although if you compare it to buying food in pet shops, it is still quite a bargain. I try to buy my mice at the local herp shows, it saves a bundle on shipping.
