African Violets

Bdimas Jun 02, 2003 06:22 PM

I was wondering if African Violets were ok to put in my Viv. Also what plants if any should I stay away from? Thanks!

Yes, I'm wondering aobut the same plant, but in the miniature form. It seems like these plants would be well suited for Tropical enviroment so long as they pose no problems to the PDFs.

I recently added an african violet to my tank (about 2 months ago). It seems to be doing well, although the blooms died off rather quickly. I think they need bright light to bloom, but the foliage seems to be multiplying in my tank. It makes a nice ground cover and I hope to add more soon.

I use some of the other gesneriads in my tanks--Sinningia, Epicia, etc., and they do well, but have never tried the African violets in the tank. They seem to like to dry out quite a bit between watering and even in the open room I have to be careful not to over water or they get mushy. Depending upon where they are in your tank, this might pose a problem.

They do need a lot of light--(long daylight or artificial light) to bloom. What you can do if you have a potted one is simply stick a healthy leaf into your soil. Bury the stem to the beginning of the leaf. If it's happy, it should form a new plant. If not, you still have the original one.
