Too many flies!!!

dragonmlv Dec 09, 2003 01:25 PM

Hi everyone,
My problem: I have too many flies in my room! I happen to have all my pets (tort, uros and millis) in my bedroom, and I have to keep the door closed all the time to keep the heat in and the dogs out. I have plants and stuff to keep the air "clean" but there is a surplus of flies. They are in all of the cages, and I can't stand it! I believe they are soil flies, but they may be fruit flies. Does anyone know an easy way to get rid of them - besides squishing them? Thanks for your help

If they are the fungus gnats (soil flies), you can try keeping your plants slightly drier. They may not go away entirely, but they should reduce in number. Since it's winter (I'm assuming you're in the northern hemisphere!) the plants will be better off with slightly less water anyway. The only other thing I've heard to try is to put a drop of tabasco in the soil of each plant. I've never tried it, so I don't know if it would work, but it isn't likely to hurt the plant in any way.

Try spraying your plants with a soap/water mix. I use a biodegradable camping soap and mix it with 3x as much water. Spray this on your plants not your herps!!!! I spray the surface of the soil, stems and leaves of the plants not any flowers you or your critters may be consuming.
