I need help taming my new uro, please!

dragonmlv Dec 09, 2003 01:34 PM

Hi everyone,
As I said before, I just recently got as a present a young CB Indian Uro, from a "breeder". I'm still uncertain as to wether she is CB or not, but she is very petrified of any human contact. Everytime I move by the cage she runs and hides, and if I take her out she tires to run away, then stops and "plays dead" and keeps her eyes shut until I put her back. I have had her for about a month now, and she gets along great with my two Malis, but I don't know what to do. I thought Indians had wonderful personalities (according to deerfern) but she is freaked by people. I am trying to take her out often (since she had 2.5 weeks to settle in) and not "pick her up" but slide my hand under her. Is this normal for a CB uro, or do you think the person was lying and she is WC? If she is WC, can she stay with my Malis (vet said she was healthy) and will she ever get tame? Thanks for any help - my two CB malis warmed up right away, so I don't know how to handle this one

if the vet found no signs of parasites and then its probly CB,
my mali is WC and is pretty tame from day one,i can hand feed it and pick it up without struggle,i can only hold him/her for a few min then he/she starts to wiggle to get down.

i say to give the uro another month or so and hold it maybe twice a week for a minute or two, hand feeding is a great way to tame anything as they see you not as a threat.

I had a mali WC that I gave up after a while of thinking she would never tame down. And although I gave her to someone I know who is taking great care of her now and I still feel I had too because of space and stuff, I realize how much she was improving. I think with uros they sometimes take a while to warm up but hey! it sound like your doin good , just dont give up.

One thing I did with my uro was to cup her in my hand if she fits if not cover her vision with your hand, not directly on her but close in a cup form so she cant see anything that scares her, hope you understand what I mean LOL. Kind of cover her in your arms and hands so shes in a dark secure spot where she can see anything, but learn your smell and what not.
Also rub her cheecks some of the like that (I think)

Good luck

Hey-

I also have a young Indian Uromastyx who hisses and pants anytime I pick him up or try to offer him food.
He is about 7" TTL.
He will occasionally eat mealworms from my hand, but not without some sort of protest.
He gets along great with my ornate (same size approx) but does not seem to care for his human caretaker.
Outside of this he is a great eater, and has just come out of a minor brumation(two weeks).
Im guessing to the sex being male. Could be female but appears to be male.
Anyway, so much for that cuddly attitude.............
