The four species of anaconda

jonasgn Dec 09, 2003 02:08 PM

I have seen someone mention that there are four species of anaconda.
I know Eunectes murinus and Eunectes notaeus. Can anyone tell me what the two last are.
Thanks
Jonas

Jonas,
The other two species are Eunectes deschauenseei described by Dunn and Conant in 1936 and the second one is Eunectes beniensis
described by Dirksen in 2002. E. deschauenseei is found in northeast Brazil and southeast French Guiana. E. beniensis is found in northern Bolivia. Both appear to be intermediate in size between E. murinus and E. notaeus.

Does anyone purport to actually have their own specimen of the new, so-called "beniensis" that Lutz (Dirksen) describes, or better yet, a photo, their own or otherwise (aside from Lutz's museum ones)?

If so, I'd sure love to see it.
In fact I hope to get to Bolivia next year, hopefully then I can get some new photos...

I have not seen a photo of a live beniensis and do not know of any live specimens at this time. I'm not sure if there is a photo of any live specimens in Dirksen's book, as I have not obtained a copy of it yet. Unfortunately, I believe his book has yet to be translated. If you come across a photo of a live one, I would really like to see it. Let me know if you have an opening for a field assistant next year.

Will do! I haven't seen a translation of Lutz's pub, either, I don't believe there is one. He's a young guy who speaks English, but not too well, however it's not as if he'd be the first to get someone to write up a translation. Maybe just not his priority right now.

I've never seen any photos of the species, either. I'm assuming Dirksen has some, but have yet to see them. I'm going to try and get in touch with him, see if he's got any he'd be willing to post/send.
