WICKED CRAZY is more like it lol....that’s one cool blue tail. I saw the one in Daytona and thought it was gorgeous. Same one? Anyway congrats on getting it. We need more albino monitors around.

Good luck with your new project.

Are you going to be breeding her?? Or is she still getting passed around?

NERDGirl Dec 10, 2003 09:49 AM

We are so excited to have this girl in our collection - she is a total sweetheart and we are looking forward to breeding her someday. We are now in the process of building a 14,000 square foot facility, complete with large sunrooms for all of our monitors, with walk-in cages/runs for both individuals and breeding groups, so she will have her own "penthouse suite" in a few short months. It's really exciting to think about what the future holds for our various monitor projects...you should see the het-albino waters - they are growing SO FAST and are SO tame it is ridiculous.

Man...if I wasn't a snake girl, I'd be into monitors FULL TIME!!!! They are just too fascinating!

Gotta love it!

Sounds like quite the facility you'll have going for them all.

Keep up the good work with them all and keep us posted about the projects. I bet the het albino waters are getting pretty big now. It will be nice when you can breed them so we can all enjoy some albino's

Good luck
Jody

I have never known monitors to be so tame as juveniles. When they started hatching, we opened the eggs just as we do our snake eggs (not cutting, more of a "peel & pray" process). I can't help but wonder if hatchling monitors are capable of imprinting at birth the same way birds are...whenever we go to mess with them, they ALL want to come out and just sit on our shoulders - none of the flighty behavior you usually see from little ones. They are extremely calm & seem intensely curious, and have been this way since day 1.

I'll post pics of them soon - they are so sweet!

Thanks for the kind words!

Kara,

That was a speedy reply I just posted that. I have found most captive born individuals to be very calm and easy to work with.
I know you guy's have worked with wild caughts and lord knows I have as well. There is a night and day difference.

I applaud anyone who is working with animals and giving them the proper care they deserve. I for one enjoy seeing what you guy's are producing.

Are you guy's having any luck with your croc monitors? I love the big male you have he is so black it's insane.

Feel free to email me anytime to talk reptiles.

first of all, i don't know why i am responding to this as i have no need to explain my motives to you, but...

like i said to kara, i would not have the animals i do if it were for the money. and as far as morphs go, they are great and i would have loved to have had that bluetail.

as a matter of fact i am so "in it for the profit" that i just blew a whole 36 bucks to get three axolotls for pets, one is luecistic, one is albino and one is normal. i assure you though, it is only to get rich. that is also why i have 65 dollar squamigers, 25 dollar leopard geckos and argus monitors that consume more than they put out in dollars. yep, i am in it for the money.

i am just not that dumb, thats the problem with your assumption about me. i have been a stock broker, if i really wanted to make money, i know how. i guarantee you its not in reptiles unless you are just one of the few, and i mean few who do.

i do like the business aspect though, i think that is fun. but i certainly like the animals more. i don't do this hobby for money, i go to work for that reason. reptiles are the reason i am able to keep smiling at work. they are my hobby and outlet. much like you i would assume.

i have my other animals that are moderately spendy like glaeurti because when i saw them for the first time, i got really gitty and decided that i would put in some overtime and get some. i have seen no profit from them and that is great, it wasn't about that. but there is a difference (to me) in spending 1500 on monitors and 23000. to me it would have to be justified in more ways than some cool colors and red eyes.

my .02 and i don't expect a reply,

andrew

I can't wait to raise a little albino from a baby!!! Same for the water monitors - can you imagine what it's going to be like to have a sweet, tame BIG albino? IT'S INSANE!!!!!! This is what it's all about folks: having fun with your animals and being constantly fascinated - and infatuated - with them every day, even through the ups and downs. Learning more about these amazing creatures, and more about ourselves through working with them, is such a blessing - remember that there are so many laws and regulations out there that many people aren't even able to begin to know these experiences!!! Go look at your monitors right now and think about how awesome and lucky it is to be able to work with them.

Being able to make a living at it is just the icing on the cake, an opportunity for which we are thankful every day!!!!!!

well, maybe do it.

i just can't justify spending 20 plus grand on a monitor that i can get for a hundred that i think is nearly as cool.

secondly, i do feel blessed to be able to work with my monitors.

third, if i was in it for the money i certainly wouldn't be working with argus, or squamigers or leopard geckos, my animals break me even on costs. there is nothing wrong with being good with money. afterall, i am sure your ball projects are not about loving ball pythons, otherwise you would have a bunch of normals.

top of the day, andrew

"afterall, i am sure your ball projects are not about loving ball pythons, otherwise you would have a bunch of normals."

And you know what they say about assuming too much, too!!! Truth is, we do have a bunch of normals. And our love of ball pythons encompasses seeing just how many different, weird new color mutations we can produce from them, very few of which we actually sell. If it was all about the money, we would have sold so many of the various morphs for lower prices and cashed out...but if we did that, we wouldn't have the snakes to make all the cool combos and find out just exactly how funky they'll turn out, see? Just being able to walk in every day and see the Killer Bees or Ghost Spiders is totally worth it...they're mindblowing!

My initial post wasn't a dig at you Andrew - I'm sorry you took it that way. I am simply trying to present a greater perspective to all of this, to everyone! In reality it ISN'T all about the money. While we are VERY fortunate to be able to make our living at this, there are too many variables you can't control with animals, and in this industry, to stake everything on high dollar projects and expect that to pay the bills without any stress or worries. If we didn't love every single one of our animals we'd have bailed on this long ago. We'd be gluttons for punishment to try that, and I think that's why a lot of people get burned out who sink a bunch of $$$ into reptiles - things rarely go exactly as you plan.

I'm not insinuating that you are in it all for the money at all, Andrew. I don't know you from the man in the moon, don't know a thing about you or your animals outside of what's posted in your signature, and these two posts from you that I've read. From the variety of animals you posted in your signature, I'm willing to bet that you enjoy such a diverse collection for a huge number of reasons - I'm sure that every single species you're working with rings your bell in ways that you can't necessarily explain...that's one of the best parts of herpkeeping! Finding those animals that kind of make you feel like you're falling in love! ***plus you have Kimberly rock monitors...I'm so envious - those are my FAVORITES! Too sexy with those birdlike little elegent heads!***

I'm simply saying that we specifically did not get the albino blue-tail with the sole intent of turning a profit on it. Kevin has been infatuated with her for a long time, and the circumstances just happened to be right for us to acquire her. Some people like fancy cars (not like they make money on those!), some people enjoy boats or expensive clothes or whatever...we happen to enjoy reptile color morphs. It's just mindboggling to be able to look at our normal bluetails alongside the albino, and go "I can't believe this is the same thing!" or put a Bumblebee next to a normal ball - the comparison is just unreal! But to us, being able to see the stark contrast between a wild type and a morph makes us enjoy both of them even more.

Besides, it's like you said - there is a lot of risk involved when it comes to stuff like this. We just got lucky for things to fall into place. But there are some animals we're willing to spend $$$ on even if we don't make anything in return, just for the sake of having them around, and we're fortunate to be able to do so.

Hope that clarifies some.

Kara,
nice aquisition and have fun with him. It's your money you earned it and need not explain to those who weren't in a position to aquire.
I've seen some of your stock and they are very nice. I'm sure you know since you've been dealing in herps for a very long time that you nned thick skin as the better you do the worse others try and make you feel.
I notice that when you post pics in different forums those invy of NERD INC tend to crawl out and throw jabs then retreat back underground.
Just know there are those who appreciate your pics and your ability to produce many beautiful species.
Have Fun With Them All..

and i respect your reasons. my original post was just saying that she was too much money for me, i am glad you could have her. and if i could afford it i would have a bumblebee ball because i think they are cool. i really have no problem with you guys and am certainly as the post below accuses (and i will spell it correctly for them) envious, you guys have a great collection but i am ony rooting you guys on to breed more. why? because i care about the hobby and the more we breed the better it gets.

if i really wanted to have somebody's collection it would be eric's, haha. he just has more of the animals i dig

best of luck with your charges,

andrew

I'm glad you could find one typo in my post, very good. I guess the rest was too difficult for you as i didn't mention you nor implied anything regarding you (and you are?).
Since spelling is your strong point and reading isn't i will post the last line for you again. Hope it helps..

keep??
Seems like it might be pretty cool.

andrew owen Dec 10, 2003 11:19 PM

last time we chatted he was keeping a large collection of gilas, all the boa morphs, all the ball python morphs (well most), glaeurti, ackies, gtp's, green tree monitors, boelens pythons, a large dumerils boa collection and some more stuff.

you would have to ask him though to be sure.

Kara, that is an incredible looking monitor (and I am not a big fan of albinos)....what are your plans with this animal?

Also, as a sidenote, I displayed the venomous snakes at the Tinley Show and thanks to you letting my daugthers holding your incredible piebald bp (and seriously, THANKS, it made their weekend), that is all they still talk about wanting to get...most girls want diamonds, mine want snakes (pretty smart gals!).
Rob Carmichael, Director/Curator of the Wildlife Discovery Center at Elawa Farm, Lake Forest Parks & Recreation, Lake Forest, IL

NERDGirl Dec 11, 2003 08:58 AM

...but you already knew that...

Seeing their sweet, angelic little faces light up when handed that piebald was one of the big highlights of my weekend. Good thing they're into snakes early!!!

As far as the albino blue-tailed monitor, we would like to breed her someday...the thought of hatching tiny albinos is soooo tantalizing! At this point we just want to get her settled and feeling as "at home" here as possible. She is super friendly - very calm and placid, but also extremely alert, and having her around has been nothing but a joy thus far.

I'll keep everyone posted with photos and updates as this project progresses.

Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks for the nice words about my girls (they really are angels!). One just did a report on, what else, the pie bald bp and used the picture of them holding your piebald...the teacher thought it was fake and she has always hated snakes...but not any more! And, my daughters wanted me to tell you that they think you are one VERY cool gal and they say THANKS AGAIN for letting them hold that snake; I don't know what you did to them, but you really helped re-ignite their interest in snakes (so thanks!). Good luck with this monitor....really a stunning animal. Rob
