mixing ages & diff. weights in a tank...

aimee_s Dec 09, 2003 07:39 PM

hi all...

although i don't plan on getting another leo until next summer, i was wondering if it would be a bad idea to mix different ages and weights of leos in a tank. because marlene is about 8 months, and will be 1 yr and 3 months old by the time i get a new leo... would it be bad to mix a baby leo in with her? should i get another adult? i know i'm supposed to quarantine for 3-6 months....so if i quarantined the baby leo, would it be safe to mix it in with marlene (i guess she'd be a year and a half by the time i mix her in).

thanks!

is it also true for crested geckos?

well if marlene is too small i've heard they might be a snack So you might want to get a sub adult around marlene's age hope this helps.

oh i meant that marlene would be a little over a year old... and that's when i'd purchase the new gecko... but if marlene might see the new leo as a snack, then i'll consider getting a subadult hehe~ thanks for your help macarthur! also, what if i put in a juvenile instead of a baby? would she still want to eat it?

I dont think a leo would actually eat another leo, but thats just my opinion and it probably very well could happen. What WILL happen if the first thing doesnt is the small leo could be intimidated and bullied by the larger leo and become stressed. I'd try to see if you could get one closer to her size so no problems occure. Good luck

thanks for your help

i guess i'll stick to getting a sub-adult / adult leo... i just hope the pet store would know how old it is... would it matter if they're a year apart? no right? coz they'll be about the same size?

thanks

Age doesn't matter at all, as long as they are as close to the same size as possible. Leos REALLY will eat each other, if one is small enough.

Talking about little leos being eaten by bigger ones makes me kind of sad because a tiny hatchling leo was being housed with several adult leos in the pet store.. I did tell them that it's really not recommended at all to house a hatchling with a group of adults because of bullying and cannibalism, but they didn't care.. I hate to think of the result of this sad mistake.

i'm glad the pet stores here don't mix them after reading this info. i guess because i haven't seen it around the pet stores, it got me wondering if i could mix them :x the only recent mix i saw was at PetSmart yesterday where there was a juvie in with some hatchlings... and the hatchling tried to bite the juvie (yeah i was spending a few minutes just watching them at 9am...lol). but they just walked away - hehe~

thanks for the sizing info i'll be sure to get a rough measurement of her before i make the trip to the pet store. there's only one pet store in my area that sells an adult leopard gecko - and it isn't the PetSmarts or the PetCos... it's the mall's pet store... it's the WORST one out of all of them because the big adult leo is in a 2.5 gallon tank with no hides. just a small water bowl, a small food dish, and a fake plant. poor little guy i feel like saving him/her now, but i have a 10gal, 1 smaller leo, and no room in my bedroom coz i had to get all those damn pets lol -- my leo is the best one!

Have you ever experienced this or know someone who did? Im not disagreeing im just curious must be horrible. I always hear people saying it can happen but never hear people say it did happen to them. Probably cause people arent stupid enough to try, lol.

iluvblackfrancis Dec 11, 2003 06:24 PM

Yes, it's happened to me. It was my ignorance though. When I first got into leopard geckos, I didn't have any real resources to help me. I didn't have the internet, and I could only find one book. The book was pretty good, but out of date. This was about four years ago, and according to this book, no morphs existed. Well, I accidentally got eggs from my two "girls" one day, and I called the guy who got me into leos and asked what to do. He said to keep them about 80-90 and all that. So I put them in a tupperwear container with moist paper towels and then put that in the gecko's tank. They hatched, and one was in the container, the tail of the other one was all I could find. I really don't understand how it got out of the container, but it did some how. I think that leopard geckos will eat just about anything small enough that moves.

I would get a gecko of a simular size. Any thing smaller may be bullied and stressed. I have read about leos in groups, and if a newcomer comes into a colony, all it needs to be stressed is the shaking of a tail, or a long lengthy stare.

thanks for that bit of info. i'm planning to get one of similar size now (before i was going to get a hatchling/juvie) after reading the responses to my question. i plan to quarantine the other for a few months in a tank next to marlene's so they can see each other through the glass... then after a few months, i'll introduce them to each other in a bigger tank. i don't think i'll have anymore than those two leos because i'm also planning to get a crested gecko maybe even two of them.. lol~ but i'll be sure to observe and watch marlene and the new leo's interactions and how well they work together. i'll probably introduce them slowly for a few minutes to a few hours.. then see from there when i should just stick them together (hopefully they'll get used to each other! ). do you think that'd be a good idea?

the only problem with having the tanks together is cross contamination while quarinting, also I am interested in getting cresties or day geckos but cresties will be cheaper in the long run.
I think now their is some sort of craze, because maybe 5 months ago I would have never heard of one.

so, even tho they will be in separate tanks, one can still contaminate the other? how does that work?

and before i even got my leo in sept, i was thinking of getting a crested. i was just hesitant to pursue the idea because i read that cresties can jump! so i wanted to try having a leo first (my 1st herp) to see how it goes... so far so good! so now that i know what to do, i want to get the crested again i want to custom build a cage (i've never done that before though.. lol) or buy a really nice one. i met a really nice guy in the cage forums and i'm hoping to spark a deal with him i hope it all works out! good luck with your geckos too... question - day geckos... they don't like being handled right?

I meant that it is easy for accidents to happen such as you touch your new gecko, if he/she has any disease and you touch you gecko or tank/hides, then whatever parisites the new gecko has, it is now in marlenes tank. I would quarintine them in different rooms. After 2-3 months when ur sure it is healthy then you can put the gecko in a critter cage and place the cage in the tank. Then you could observe them. I did this when I first introduce the female to my male. Remember to change the surroundings when you introduce them.
