Mealworm Breeding Setup - O.K.?

NocturnalCreatur Dec 09, 2003 07:43 PM

From reading various websites, this looks like all I need to do. I'm going to leave the beetles in with the worms, as it worked out so well apparently in my Savannah's enclosure. (read below post by me) I'll put it in my reptile room which stays a good 80º most of the time.. unless slightly lower temps like the rest of the house would be ok? Usually around 75º to 78º

Here's the pics...

Are those mealworms or superworms? i cant tell really well form the sides but they look like supers.

Either way, the bedding that i use, not for breeding, only feeding them, is usually more ground up than that. but thats theonly thing i see that i'm doing differently well i dont' have a worm rack its just sort of a plastic container with holes in the top.

Looks fine save for the food source.. Normal oatmeal is not a nutritious source of food for them.. They'll live on it.. but your reptile won't be getting the nutrients it needs from them. I'd switch over to either a mixture of ground dogfood/baby cereal/grains/rabbit pellets/potato flakes or get some laying mash from a feed store.

And yes those are mealies.. Supers are darker colored unless freshly molted...there's a definate difference in appearence between Mealies and supers

The oatmeal is temp. until I can get more rabbit food (pellets).
It's all I had available to use.

Rabbet pellets are 90% alfalfa which in not great for mealies. Use a mixture of ground grains as suggested above, corn meal, rice baby cerial, course ground wheat and oats, that kind of thing.

The thing that will kill your worms faster than anything else will be too much moisture and mold. Watch your vegies closley untill you learn how much you can keep in there without getting everything too wet. Change them often.
