handling question

puchuupoet Dec 09, 2003 08:11 PM

I read somewhere (Reptiles magazine, I think) that frogs can absorb diseases and pathogens through their skin, and that when they are held, you should be wearing plastic/latex gloves that have been moistened with spring water. Is that true?
Also, at the pet store I work at, I've been working with the reptiles/amphibians more than usual. How important is it that I and the other employees wear gloves when handling the amphibians (mainly tree frogs)?

Thanks,
Rachel

Yes, it's true and it's pretty important. If your hands are truly clean and it's very rare handling, it's not going to kill the frog or anything, but they do have permeable skin and are sensitive to even the oils in our skin. Regular handling, as in once every week or two, should not occur. If it must, well, use gloves, yes.
