The bosc monitor is a mass imported animal (16,000 a year for pets alone, and 100,000 for skins to the world). They are a popular first time monitor and impulse buy because you can get them for as low as $5 or less if you look. Nobody has sucessfully bred them in a couple of years in North American, and extremely rarely anywhere else. The bosc is a medium sized species that averages between 2.5-4 ft and 2-10lbs or rarely more. They are from farmland, woodland, grassland areas of North Central Africa.
The Blackthroat (Albigularis/whitethroat) is a large grassland to woodland species that when found in the same areas is a predator of the Bosc (smallest monitor in Africa). The albig grows from 5-7 ft and from 15-38lbs. They are found from North central Africa to the tip of South Africa. They are bred on rare occaisions worldwide and by a few people in the US and Canada. Frank Retes breeds banded WTs, Pro Exotics has bred BTs, Rob Faust used to breed BTs/WTs/and crosses, Dan Turner has Bred BTs.
As a captive it all depends on what you like or are capable of supporting (realistically).
As both species need alot of space deep substrate, and their personalities vary from one extreme to the other as individuals. Its always best to get Captive BRED animals as they never have seen the wild life so miss it less and learn to trust you alot easier. Both can bite hard and scratch badly. The Albig can do some serious damage and is one of the strongest species of monitor at any size.
If you have any doubt about caring for a sizeable monitor, or are not capable of a very large cage (4x4x8ft or 5x6x10 ft) in a years time from hatchling, then get some ackies and learn what a monitor is on a manageable scale. I have 2 albigs, 1 ackie, and have had many other monitors before. Good luck on your decision.
