pictus gecko

dagangsta Dec 09, 2003 09:59 PM

hey i was wondering if there are any serious problems that could be caused by keeping a small leopard gecko and a pictus gecko (both equal in size) in the same tank?

Whats the point in mixing all these species. You keep asking everywhere on mixing (example: Treefrog forum; RETF with WTF in a 10g?, etc). Everyone keeps saying no and how it wont work out, yet you still continue to ask. Why come and ask for advice, when your not going to take it? Are you going to keep asking until you hear what you want to hear? Get a different tank for the pictus. Their not big geckos. You can even use a plastic shoebox, just make sure to have proper heating.

If you dont have the space for other animals, dont buy them. Simple. However, dont keep asking on mixing them together. It doesnt matter if their the same size, etc. How big of a tank do you plan on keeping them in anyway? Im not going to give more of these posts on mixing incompatible species together anymore to you, because it doesnt make a difference as your not going to listen.

first off i'll start out by saying i'm only 15, my parents don't like reptiles so they all need to be in my small room which is only about 9 by 8 and i currently have 2 ten gallon tanks, a 50 gallon and a 20 gallon long, i love reptiles, and i'd just like to expand my collection, i was trying to see if there was anyway that i would work it out getting this gecko cuz the person who currently has it has no clue on how to take care of it. my parents have said that i'm not allowed to get anymore tanks in here, so thats ruled out, so do you see my dilema? plus i'm just trying to learn more you don't have to give me crap for asking about mixing incompatible species b/c if i knew that they were incompatible i wouldn't be asking, except maybe to find out why just so i know in case anyone ever asks me. and yes it is making a difference i'm not going to take the gecko, i'm gonna get the persons phone number and try to find sum1 who will take it then call them...

Ok,

First off let me say im not much older than you. Second, i was never against anyone in mixing, i even do it myself. You can try it and see how it goes, but i doubt it will go well. Try recommending your friend to some books or websites instead of yourself doing his work.

I apologize for my "crap response".

Why dont people just say no, instead of making people feel bad about mixing reptiles.I mix a crocodile gecko and me. geck with my 2 green anoles in there 80 gallon tall enclosure.I dont know how big pictus geckos get so I cant answer your question.

Well, you obviously cant read. Look at the top post "Everyone keeps saying no and how it wont work out, yet you still continue to ask." Everyone (including me) already said that. I suggest buying some glasses, or atleast a book (Might i suggest Dr. Seusse for a beginner?).

To make you feel better,
Dagangsta: No, i wouldnt. If your mom sais you cant buy anymore tanks, what will happen when the leo outgrows the pictus?

when my leo starts geting bigger i would then be able to put her in with my other leo, currently they can't be together though cuz of the size diff, either way yea, i'm not oggnn amix em cuz first off i've been told its not ok to do and second cuz either way the person didn't show up with it today

K gangsta. Try it. You say the pictus has nowhere to go. Is he much bigger than the leopard? The deal with the pictus is, they are very agressive. It will most likely pick on your leopard. This shouldnt be too bad if they are both small in a 10. It would be best if the leo was a bit bigger as they tend not to care too much for other lizards. I would try it, keep an eye on them and seperate them if damage occurs. A few battle wounds wont hurt them, and I doubt there will be much trouble since they're both juvies. Do keep an eye on them for the first couple of days though, if you see agressive behavior then give him back...pictus are just not known to coohabitat too well. Its up to you to take the risk and save the lizard, or let it go and try and teach your friend how to properly care for it. Ask me if nobody will help you out...I work at a petshop and quite used to all sorts of dumbass questions (no offence). We tend to specialize in finding middle ground (and are hated for it) because nobody listens to how to properly keep animals and we come off as the bad guys telling people how to keep their herps....well most of us anyway.

lol, i def know what you mean by dumbass questions, i work at petsmart in columbia i swear some of the ppl who come in are just complete retards, and they just don't listen to me no matter what i say prolly cuz i am so young they just think that i don't really know what i'm talking about

It's a good rule of thumb to NEVER mix species. Two animals from 2 different environments may harbor bacteria or other microbes that are beneficial to 1 species and may be harmful to the other. The only way to safely mix species is if you house 2 species that share a place of origin, but occupy different niches in that environment (such as your pictus gecko from Madigascar could be housed with any of the Uroplatis species also from Madigascar, one being arboreal & one being mainly terrestrial). In such a case you would also need a very large enclosure.

Paul,

That was a very level, cool response to a hot thread...and made rational, easily-understood sense. Thanks for that reply!
