possibly aborted Giant Day gecko egg?

Chris P. Dec 09, 2003 10:21 PM

I have a breeding pair of Giant Day geckos. They have only been together for about four months. I started to lower the temps and shorten the light cycle in November, however, I observed some possible breeding bite marks on the females neck about 3 1/2 weeks ago. Tonight, I noticed some odd (yolk like?) discharge from the female. Shortly after this discarge was noticed in the cage, she passed what appears to be a torn egg shell. Is it possible, that even though they are not in season that he mated with her? and that she may have aborted the egg?
any ideas as to what may have happened would be helpful.

thanks,
chris

Hey,

How old is the female?

They will eat their unfertile eggs from time to time, to aid in extra calcium and nutrients.

My female used to eat her unfertile eggs quite often. There was often the remains of white patches where she had laid them then eaten them.

unfortunately that is not what happened. The egg was layed the way that I described it. I saw her lay the egg. She laid a second one in the same manner later that night.

Is she getting enough vitamins calcium? Birds can lay fragile eggs when they are deficient, I don't see why lizards can't. Maybe she's trying to lay the eggs, the pressure ruptures them and that's why you see the interior deposited and then a torn egg shell layed later. Just a thought, keep in mind I know very little about day geckos.
