Mosquito dunks harmful?

SmilingTurtle Jun 02, 2003 07:18 PM

Does anyone have experience using mosquito dunks in outdoor habitats for box turtles? With garbage can lids or plastic dishes for water supply? These dunks are supposed to be safe for fish but I haven't seen anything about turtles. To quote the ad, they are "Made with natural Bacillus thuringiensis (BT-i), Mosquito dunks or donuts are made from natural BT-i. BT-i is a non-toxic way to deal with mosquitoes. "

No they arent harmful at all... the bacteria affects the mosquito larvae only.

I agree, the BT-i is very specific to mosquito larvae, and I've used it in a still-water situation with birds bathing and drinking with no ill effects.
However, since it would be wisest to change the water frequently anyway, you shouldn't need to use the dunks at all. I have a large enclosure for my guys with both a small pond, complete with pump and spouting water, as well as a shallow dish which gets re-filled daily, sometimes twice daily, so I probably won't need to use biologicals when a simple dump, rinse, and re-fill will do.
