Scale rot?

Netti Dec 10, 2003 08:17 AM

Has anyone seen this before? Could you describe it to me or have any links to pics?

The non-feeder I posted about last week or so has a reason for not feeding. He's in quite a poor state. He had ticks and is covered in scars. He was in shed when I got him and it's taken him ages to complete and it's all coming off in bits. Underneath he has these brown patches, like tips on the scales and he was stinking. I've been bathing it in a betadine solution and it seems to be improving but I'll be getting him to a vet as soon as I can find one local-ish. The one I usually use almost killed a couple of my animals so I don't go there any more, and am still looking for another one.

Any help very much appreciated.

Here are some pics of a very mild case of scale rot. This snake (Marvin) was treated with betadine baths and neosporin daily. He cleared up after his next shed. Marvin never had an "Odor" If your snake is to the point of actually having an odor associated with the rot then I would definatly see a vet. He/she may need antibiotics. If I am not mistaken (I could be, so take this with a grain of salt) scale rot is called "Necromizing Dermatitus" (Probably mis-spelled that) which roughly translated would be "Dieing/dead skin tissue", so it may need special treatment if the "Dead" area has extended far.

Good Luck
