Here's another pic of a Mexican Baird . . .>

terryp Dec 10, 2003 09:04 AM

Here's a pic of one of Steve and Kelli Hammack's Mexican Barids. I am lucky enough to have them on breeder loan this year. The more I see and work with them, the more I appreciate and like them. I have six of them from Steve and Kelli and they are just as amazing as their counterpart Texas Bairds. This should give you an idea when people talk about that gray classic Mexican Baird head color.

Looks like you have picked up quite a few bairdi Terry. I am going to have to get a pair of some Mexican Bairds too, love that grey head.

Thanks for the comments Travis. I've really gotten into working the Bairds. The grey head of the Mexican Baird is neat.

Thanks for the comments Brian. I will have my hands full with the bairds. I couldn't do it without the fact I enjoy them so much. It's really fun having them. I should have 2 unrealted locality Mexican Baird bloodlines and 4 plus locality Texas Baird bloodlines in the works for this coming season. I also had gotten the Hammack's locality Texas Bairds to go along with my Texas Bairds. The thing is when the babies hatch they will all look pretty much alike. So I can't pick any hold backs unless I keep them all for a couple years. Even the Texas and Mexicans will look alike, except the gray body ground color of the Mexican will usually be slightly darker and their head is narrower as compared to the Texas Baird.

Gregg - Thanks for the comments. You'll really enjoy them when you get them. Talking about wishlists; here's a pic for you. They are so secretive, she's hiding her head. HeHe

Looks like a rosaliae. Would be prettier if her face were visible..haha. Ter, that MX bairdi was nnnnice. Got any more pics, like a closeup of the head? BTW, does there happen to be locality info on that MX bairdi? You probably said so before, but I don't know much about where they're from or the ecology. Thanks....TC.

You are correct on the Baja rat snake. Gregg has them on his wishlist on his website so I was ribbing him.
I'll take some more pics of the Mexican Bairds. I didn't know people would want to see them. The two Mexican Baird locales are Llenores (sp) Canyon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and Iturbide Canyon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I should look up the habitat, etc on those localities, but haven't as yet. I should know you would be curious. Thanks for the commetns Terry and the questions. Wish I had more loaclity information. This may have been a better pic of the head of the same snake.

Real nice contrast with the head pattern. Would love to see them in person. Thanks

I had gotten two unrelated pairs of offspring Mexican Bairds, but they hadn't made the transition these adults have yet. I keep repeating myself, but they are really nice snakes. The body color varies from a dark burnt orange to a yellow/orange. It can go from a flat color to a shiny bright color This comes from a hatchling that looks like the Texas Baird hatchlings. They are also voracious eaters. I couldn't believe it. My cape gopher snakes, baja rat snakes, several of the other snakes south of the border can be slow eaters. They can eat every two weeks and small meals. The Mexican Bairds seem to eat like a North American rat snakes. There's so much you can see about them all the time. One species that should keep you busy when you get to AZ if you'd like.
