Are bromeliads poisonous if ingested?

audiotaylor Dec 10, 2003 04:48 PM

Hey guys and gals,
I reciently got a sugar glider (for those of you who are scratching their heads, www.sugargliders-r-us.com/sugargldrs.htm ) and am in the process of "glider=proofing" my room. I have a few neo bromeliads that are being stored in an empty tank untill I have the time and money to work on it. The tank has no lid, and the little guy would be easily able to enter the tank and possibly chew on the leaves. Do any of you know if this would hurt him? Thanks for any help.

Bromeliads are not known for high concentrations of secondary compounds. So it is doubtful that there is much toxic stuff in them. On the other hand they are CAM plants so there is a daily acid cycle. I'll bet they either taste to bad because of the malate or they are just to tough for the little guy eat on them. I wouldn't worry to much.

WOW those things look cool. I'm a pet nut and have to stop myself when I see things like that. What are they like?

Oh they are the most amazing little animals! Their personalitys are so playful and loving that you NEED to spend a couple hours a day with them or they can get so lonley and depressed that they will stop eating. So unless you can afford a companion for them, they need LOTS of human interaction. But its not like this is a chore because they are so fun. Mine hasnt completly tamed to me yet, but soon enough Ill be able to have him glide to me on a command! And when they arent spasticly running around during the night, they will willing sleep in your pocket for hours during the day. They can live up to 15 years so they are defnately a long term responsibility. I built him this aviary that is 53" long, by 4' high, and 18" deep with several nest boxes, a safe wheel, and several 4' dowel rods for him to play on. He's very content and is starting to warm up to me. I just bought a bonding pouch on ebay to help speed up the process. Basicly, you hang the open pouch inside the cage near the door so its easy to remove. Then when he goes to sleep in it in the morning, you close it and take it out. Then you wear one shirt that has your scent, hang the nesting pouch, glider-and-all, around your neck and put on another button-up shirt on over it. That way, he feels secure under the 2 layers of warm clothing and can begin to feel more safe with your scent. Yeah, well, that basicly gives you the gist of what kind of animal a sugar glider is. If you have the dilligence and the desire to care for one, you really should cosider one Talk to you later.
