Does anyone have practical experience placing a heat panel over a screen top. I understand that placing it directly on top of a screen is bad news, but if you lift it up by the side frame about a half inch, things will be ok. Is that true?

It would probably be OK, depending on what type of screen top you have, but I like to prop it up a couple of inches so the metal screen won't get so hot directly.

i have a pro product panel though ive never tried it over screen tops. it needs a few inches to breath or it will begin to brown. most are designed to be used inside the cage because they wont burn the animals. you could screw it through the screen and out the top into a wood sheet (quarter inch or thicker). call bob pound from www.pro-products.com (number on the site) he loves to talk about his equipment. i also believe they should be used with some type of thermostat so the cage interior doesnt get too hot.
