Mixing Frogs With Red-eared Slider Turtles

turtlesong Dec 10, 2003 08:57 PM

I know it's not a good idea according to some, but I've done it before. Safely. I've raised a couple of bullfrogs that because they've gotten sooooooooo big, I've had to put in my turtle pond. Once they get this big, about five to six inches, they're pretty much aquatic hulks. But I have some misgivings.

I've one bullfrog now I want to attempt to do this with again. My pond has dry land, is escape proof, and has places it can hide. The turtles will usually shy away from full grown bullfrogs from what I've experienced before. But I wonder if this is too much stress for the poor creature, and what you all think.

It does frogs good to feel more free and wild. I've even had them bellow for mates. That is, the males. But some turtles are unpredictable, or overly aggressive, so you have to try your hand at a whole new group if you haven't all ready done so before. I know turtles eat frogs. But I don't think they eat fullgrown bullfrogs. Yet give me any imput if you have some advice, as I do plan to do this for the third time again soon.

Yea, i always wanted to mix red eared sliders with some acf's. Is this possible? I have two of each and they are babies.

If they're babies it's probably even better because the frog will grow much quicker. But then this might be the problem. If the frog grows too big it'll eat the turtle.

This is not to say, however, that it isn't possible to mix bullfrogs with sliders. I've done it two years in a row, and that with sliders 9 inches in diameter. But it's only possible if you give them both enough space, the bullfrog dry land or places to hide, and MAKE SURE THE TURTLES AREN'T TOO SMALL FOR THE BULLFROGS TO EAT!!

Yes, it IS POSSIBLE, and even more aesthetic, if you ask me. Sliders will shy away from full-grown bullfrogs, but they may nip at its toes, which is why I've posted this topic. I wonder if it's too much stress for the frogs, and if anyone here has had any such experiences at all.
