Humidifier, Mister question...... Please help not just read.

rsalib Dec 10, 2003 10:49 PM

I am looking to change my fogger that I use to either a Reli-on Ultrasonic Humidifier that I believe someone suggested with a timer and pvc tubing.

But I am wondering, is that a cool mist or a warm mist? What is better?

Has anyone used the Pro-Products misting system? How does that work? Same question, is it a warm/hot or cool/cold mist?

Should I just spend the extra money on that bigger system or just use the wal-mart reli-on, one?

That was me that suggested the Reli-On cool mist humidifier. For the last 6 months or so I have been using one in each of my snake rooms and achieving even up to 99% humidity, though keeping it at about 75% after a mold began to grow on the cieling. These humidifiers work great initially, but they don't last long. I didn't realize at first because I was replacing the humidifiers with new units monthly rather than have to clean the old ones. But when I failed to buy new ones the old ones seemed to break down rather rapidly. The ultrasonic cup would show corrosion and rust and would eventually cease working. So I no longer endorse this particular brand and am in fact in the market for something much better. (Though I am considering simply making a prototype of a humidifier I have been mentally designing)

I'm extremely glad you responded. I was actually going to buy that humidifier and do the whole setup you told me about before.

I have seen the misting system from ProProducts. I really want to change what I have. I'm not really worried about mold, because I clean my cage weekly with lysol and change the bedding.

I need something that doesnt make a puddle and delivers the mist throughout the cage. Let me know if you build your humidifier. I would be one that would really be interested. Thanks again for your input Brian. I'm learning. haha

You can buy a nice 3 gallon cool mist WITH a humidistat at home Depot for around $45. The humidistat is great because you can set the desired humidity and it will hold the room at the desired "percent" of humidity. The cool mist uses "wicking" action and a fan rather than the electric method of the warm mist. We do tend to wear out the warm mist quickly because they are not designed to run as long as we run them, day-in and day-out. You will start getting mineral build up which will slowly decrease their efficiency and you will have to constantly clean it AND refil it daily. You shouldn't have those problems with the cool mist.

I have all of my cages connected by Big Apple's misting system and have been very pleased. It is a cheaper system but the end result is that the cages get misted regardless of which system you get. The only drawback is that you can not let the resivour run dry. If the pump runs for an extended period without water, it will burn up. I run my misting system in one minute increments three times a day. With that schedule, I have to refil the resivour about once a week and if it does go dry, one minute is not long enough to burn up the pump even if it does go dry. I have been very satisfied and the unit was only $99.

What ever happened to soaking newspaper?, Use it as substrate and the same time it keeps the humidity up. If it works for a blood python wich requires a higher humidity level than a burm, then it should work for a burm. It's just my opinion.
