Crushed Walnut Shell... okay substrate?

lbcball Dec 10, 2003 11:04 PM

Currently I am using coconut fiber as the substrate in my BP's enclosure. I was wondering if switching to crushed walnut shells would have any ill effects on my little guy. Opinions welcome

I wouldn't use it, simply because it's not worth the chance of impaction.

I use it for my Kenyan Sand Boa - I do, however, feed out of the enclosure. I like it, and being that he is a burrowing species it works well for him. I've heard of people who use it for sand boas, but never heard anyone comment on it for a BP.

seeing it stuck in a snakes mouth after feeding was enough to turn me off of that substrate forever.

Would the walnut shells hurt my BP if he ingested them. I know that the Coconut fiber I use now is perfectly safe for him to eat if he is to accidentaly get some in his mouth.

It's ok to use. I used to use it for a while. But dont feed your BP in the tank. Ingestion may or may not be a problem based on the size of your BP. If its a large adult, for example, it will just pass it through the feces. But I never like feeding in the enclosure regardless.

It says it's safe, but I don't know. I prefer not to risk it. I too wonder if it's safe depending on the size of your snake. To be safe I just feed outside the enclosure. Not too much of a pain, but I like the stuff. Nice smell. I sift it a bit to get out any dust that is possibly settled at the bottom of the bag.
