Hatchling Gator size question....

O_S Dec 10, 2003 11:42 PM

Here's a question for anyone who has actually measured a baby gator RIGHT out of the egg. No guesses, please??

We're wondering... For comparison purposes - what would you consider the average SVL and STL for a hatchling gator - fresh out of the egg?

Thanks in advance.

I have witnessed an average of between 8 1/2 and 9 inches and approximately 42-56 grams.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply. We're just attempting to guage the growth of our yearling female. She is exactly one year, 3 months old, and is 16 inches STL, 194 grams.

It seems she is on target for a female.

There are so many variables that affect growth rates Mark that it's nearly impossible to set a "target one year length". I have had 42 1/2 inch yearling females (one actually), and as little as 14 inches and every length in between. I rarely weigh them, but the 42 1/2 inch female was 184 ounces dry at her one year birthday. Which is 11 1/2 pounds. I kept very specific records on her up to her 5th year of life due to her amazing growth rates.
