What is better?

Chuck420 Dec 11, 2003 12:24 AM

hey i was doing some more research on corns and i read something about reptile bark for a substrate..is this better then aspen? and can snakes still burrow under it? because thats what mine likes doing sometimes.

I dont feed her in the cage tho i put her in a seperate container with nothing in it but her and the pinky so she has no chance of eating any substrate because i also read that ingesting aspen can be a problem for them. i have quite a big bag of aspen left so i think i will finish that off before i switch to something else if i do thanks for the help

Right now i'm using a reptile bark and it seems to be working well. my 2 month old corn doesn't burrow often, but once in a while i does and can get under pretty well. not only that but it has a nice woody smell that covers up any other odors. I still have half a bag left to use, but I plan on trying something else when i run out. nonetheless, i think it's working well and looks great. i'm still really new to this, but i heard that you should rinse it before using it so the dust is minimized too. i wish i had a picture... a digital camera is on my santa list though. heh.

I use reptile bark with my corns and milk and they do fine with it. My corns don't really burrow under the bark. They usually hide under the water bowl as it sets on the bark and creats a nice hide for them. They love it. I want to use the bark for my jungle carpet python too. I like the smell and the natural look. I only change parts of it as it gets soiled. I haven't tried the aspen.

I used to use repti bark but i have read that it is fir and it contains some toxic chemicals that leak out if they get into the water. I also found that aspen is better for burrowing because it will hold the tunnel that the create.

I use aspen for all my corns & they have never had any problems on it. I have also found aspen to be cheaper.
Hope this helps.

I now use paper towels with all of my snakes because it is easiest to clean. However, between Reptile Bark and Aspen, I have found that the reptile bark keeps out odors much better and is much more attractive than aspen. Plus, it is easier to spot clean.
