Will my Herman's Tortoises do well without hibernation?

cobaltblue Dec 11, 2003 03:33 AM

Dear forum/herman's keepers,
Will my Herman's Tortoises do well without hibernation? I've heard stories of people who don't hibernate their Hermans (Boetger.) Tortoises and they still breed perfectly. I read a care sheet from Richard Fife on the net that says just that. i live in San Diego FYI.

sincerely,
byronm

If you keep the little guy under the conditions that it needs to keep going it should do just fine.
There is a long standing argument that states there are long term effects if the tortoise is not allowed to hibernate. I do agree with this if the tortoise is inclined to hibernate and you try and force it not to. This is the same as trying to force it to hibernate and it is not inclined to hibernated on its own. To answer your question, I don't think there is problem not hibernating your tortoise. I have some species that normally hibernate but have been doing better for me since I've kept them up all year.
