New additions..... NOT Beardies

BeginnersBasics Dec 11, 2003 07:19 AM

I did that small show in Orlando this past Saturday and while there I picked up a couple new additions....

These guys are something I have wanted for quite some time now and finally I got them.

Now I just want to get another 3 females.

I plan on building a huge outdoor pen for them in the spring. They are cold hardy, but they have been kept indoors and I figure why shock them with the weather this side of Christmas. LOL

Well, here they are.......

Sid & Sally my Russian torts!

Wow those are pretty cool. I never got into tortoises all that much, but kept a few smaller turtles as a child like painted turtles, sliders, and box turtles. How big do those kind get? Really cool Lisa good luck with them. That outdoor enclosure should be pretty neat too. Just got to make sure no prey can get in or fly in. We kept our small painted turtles outdoors in the summer and spring in a backyard pond, but we had to put up netting cause raccoons would come to the pond for a drink, and I'm sure they snacked on our fish too. I'm thankful to have caught them in the act cause I'm sure they would have taken a turtle if given the chance.

Cool, I was at the show too. Just picked up my first Beardie and some Leopard Geckos. Are you going to the West Palm Beach show this Saturday? It's the Alternative pet one.

No I won't be at the west palm show. I am busy as heck right now with my father being here, Christmas coming up, etc.

How come you didn't stop by and say "hi" if you were there Saturday? lol

Every time my dad comes with me to this one reptile place to get crickets or something, he always has to ask about the russian tortoises (and he's not even in to reptiles). The guy that runs the reptile place almost had my dad about to buy one, but my mom insisted that we didn't

They are really cute, and a manageable size too. They're one of the only tortoises that are small enough that you don't have to have either a huge outdoor pen, or a huge indoor pen. You can house one in a minimum of something like 36"x18" floorspace, can't you?

Yes, they don't require a lot of room. Right now for indoor winter purposes I have them in a 3 shelf bookcase laid on it's back with the shelves removed. They seem to have plenty of room and are always on the move. These are one of the most active of the Tort species and the added bonus of them staying a small easy to handle size is VERY nice.
99% of them are still imported and my goal is to establish a breeding colony, so captive bred animals will be available also.

I sold 1/2 of what I took with me, so things went well for a first time being on the selling side of the table. I had some real lowwwwwww prices on them since I needed to clear them out. I want to take a month or two off and focus on home and family for awhile.
