Anyone know anything about redfoot tortoises?? (sorry for OT post)

Wain Dec 11, 2003 09:31 AM

Hi guys,

sorry for the off topic post, and I have posted this in the tortoise forum also, I just don't know any of them, and have no idea how long it might take for a response, so I figured I'd ask here too.

I have a friend with a male redfoot tortoise that she's had for 20 years as her only reptile. He basically sees her as his mother. She has recently been considering getting another redfoot either as a playmate or actual mate, but she wanted to know if ther was any possibility for territorial/domination issues if they were kept in the same tank.

Any ideas??

thanks in advance,
Wain

Yes there are posabillites that they will have a dominance fight but just make sure they are not two males and she will be ok. It is normally not a big deal unless they are two males fighting for females then it can get dangerous. hope this helps

I suggest posting your question on the tortoise/turtle forum.

you might want to contact Jimmy from Draybar (http://members.tripod.com/~Draybar/redfootcare.html)
he is on this forum too. He has been raising torts longer than I have. I would apply the same rule as beardies. Similar in size animals, males and females only if you want babies and 2 males only if they have enough room to each have a territory and get away from the other. I would guess 50 sq ft at the minimum.
2 males may battle a bit but not like Beardies. its more like who can turn the other one on its back.

just my opinion
