Feeding My First Corn

rfmaui99 Dec 11, 2003 09:49 AM

I just purchased my first corn snake and was curious whether or not I should feed him in his cage or feed him in a seperate container. Pros and Cons for both would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Russ

I have had success with taking my corns out of their enclosures and feeding them in another container. This is so they don't get accustomed to the hand always offering food and possible biting. I feed mine seperate and use frozen/thawed. Never feed live unless they absolutely won't eat for a really long time. Live foods may bite or injure corns or any snake. I have feed my amel female in her enclosure but not very often. As far as handling..I wait 24-48 hours to handle. Now if you do feed in a seperate container then moving them back to their enclosure should be no problem. It's the handling them for any length of time right after they eat that they can regurg. Mine will eat when I watch them. When they were little I put them in a dark container but now they will eat if I just set them by the meal and they go for it. Esp my ghost. I usually set him on my dresser or table and he will eat. The other problem with feeding in their enclosure is the possibility of the snake ingesting some substrate (unless you use paper or something like that.) Before I offer mine their meal is when I handle them too for 10-15 minutes, then put them down to eat. This way they are active and warm up a bit if they feel alittle cool. Good Luck!

hi im new to this too and i agree with the previous post, i like feeding my corn in a seperate container, i put her in a ice cream tub with the pinky just so she doesnt have a chance of eating any substrate and also then she knows when it is feeding time not just assuming everytime your hand comes in, this is just my opinion tho im sure people have had success with feeding in the cage, the last time i tried it tho i used a smaller tub and had the pinky in it, she just came up, grabbed the pinky and took it into her cage and ate it, and almost swallowed a piece of aspen with it, that was the last time ill try it, and lastnite i just had to tip the bucket a bit and she went happily into her cage remember its just my opinion of it cuz i heard alot of friends to tell me to do this

I also feed on my snakes in the enclosure however i put the food in when im handling them then place them back in. in my own twisted mind i feel they will not recocgnize ,y hand as food but handling means getting fed and maybe they will like to be handled. it has worked so far.
