good beginner arboreal lizard?

aimee_s Dec 11, 2003 11:40 AM

hi all...

i know it's kinda OT, but no one in the lizard forum is replying... there's no one there.. lol

i know cresties are good, but i'm already getting those... i'll have an extra 20 - 25gal tall and i'm wondering if there are any geckos or lizards that can live its whole life there... but one that's easy to handle and stays kinda small so i can let it crawl on me

thanks all

btw, marlene is doing a bit better... still kinda lazy from the weather i guess. it's just that the muscle contractions still kind of worry me..

A pair of nice Madagascar Giant Day Geckos would do well with proper lighting. You shouldn't handle them, but they'd make a really great display in that size tank.

I used to handle mine actually, and take it outside to bask, or let roam around my room for a few hours. I havnt seen a single speck of skin fall off except a patch on the side, but that wasnt my fault. I only handled her from the belly though, and never touched the top (ie- back, head, etc).

She was tamed by using babyfood from my fingers, but the gecko started at an early age.

I dont think they would "do well" imo. Survive, yes.

A pair would need atleast a 60g, but thats bare minimun. You can get gold dust day geckos, lined day geckos, etc. The "dwarf" variety would fare well.

You might want to consider another species in Rhacodactylus - like an auriculatus (gargoyle). They are easy to handle - have interesting knobby heads, and come in some pretty cool patterns. Plus, there husbandry is the same - so it would be a no brainer.

You might want to consider a Pink Tongued Skink - even though I have never owned one myself - I am trying to get one for a vivarium I'm putting together for my church.

hi monte!

you've been a big help with all of my crested gecko questions... lol~ i'm filling up that forum! and since you and a friend recommended me to gargoyles, i decided that i would get that in addition to the crested gecko next summer. and since it'll be the same as taking care of cresteds, then it'll be smooth sailing from there i posted a question about them in the Rhac forum so i don't keep this thread OT :x i just had a quick question... lol

how long have you been into herping?

only about 4 years. It seems longer, though. I'm still learning as well.
