Breeding and such

JonP Jun 02, 2003 09:18 PM

I am looking to start breeding Boas again I have done Red Tails and Hogg Islands. I don't want to do either of those anymore. I might do the red tails but I have been looking at the Dumerils. What do you all think of them. I have been around a couple of them. My experience has been that they are very docile and great eaters. What kind of problems have any of you run into with them? What about argentines? I have read from a couple of different sources that they are snappy. I also read that about Hogg Islands, and that I haven't found to be true, except when they are babies.
By the way if there is anyone in the WA area trying to get rid of a adult pair of either RED Tails - Dumerils - or Argentines let me know. Also if anyone in the WA is interested in a Male Hogg Island or a breeding pair Red Tails let me know
Thanks and I know I am probly not suppose to put that there.

Hey there,
Well I am not the best person to answer this but since no one
else has yet...
Durms - nice big snakes, adults I've seen were very girthy, but
they may just have been overfed. Nice and docile. As babies
they can be picky eaters, they like to burrow and ambush their
prey. Beautiful colors and pattern IMO
Argies - another nice big snake, heavily bodied, get darker
as they age, can be hissy, even as adults (from people I've
talked to that own them).

My hoggie was very hissy when I first got him, took about 2
months then he calmed down and has a typical BCI temperment now.

I dont know about argentines, but here's what I think about dums.

My dums, as babies, were all a little difficult to get started on F/T, or even live food. They liked to have litter available to ambush their prey from. After close to a year went by they all figured out that nothing was going to hurt them when they're eating and that the food doesnt go anywhere. Now they dont hesitate; in fact, they ALL (4) have a feeding response like no other snake I've ever owned.
They are all tame, although you really have to watch out for that darn feeding response. I have to take 3/4 of them out with a hook. Once they are out they are great; in fact, one of them, a 6 footer, has been brought to schools, colleges, and has been a best friend to my 5 year old for 3 yrs. She runs all over the house with her around her neck and curls up to watch movies.

I love dums for many reasons. I have never bred them, but plan to this year since my male is going to be old enough finally. They are a truly beautiful animal.

Check out the pics in my album!! The link is below.

Hope this helps!
