shedding problems

nikki_c Jun 02, 2003 09:20 PM

Kashka is having some problems shedding. I got him about two months ago, and I don't know if anyone remembers, but I had some questions about it then because he had spots where the old skin simply would not come off. And it still has not. But now he is trying to shed again, and everything that could has shed, but then there are alot of patches where it is clumped up in yellow hard spots from previous sheds that have build up from before I bought him. I was really concerned about it then, but I live out in the middle of no where, literally, and the closest rep vet is 3 to 4 hours away. I was thinking about asking my local vet if she could make some calls to see if there is a moisturizer or something I could put on him. Also, I just tried giving him a soaking for about a half hour, but nothing budged, his old skin is a stuck as ever. Well, we just finished drying off in front of the heater (he loves that, the warm air just lulls him right to sleep!). So, any help would be appreciated. Thanks! ~Nikki~

I have used a product by Nature Zone called "Shed Away." It is a moistener, softener and lubricator. You just gently rub it in to affected areas with your finger twice per day. It is not a cure all, but it does help with loosening dead tissue. I think I got this at a pet shop, otherwise there is a website on the bottle naturezonepet.com. Good luck.

try neosporin. One of ours has had a similar problem around his mouth (NO it is NOT mouthrot, trust me) and we have gently put some neosporin on the area every few days with a q-tip and it is slowly coming off.
