crested gecko sexing question

aimee_s Dec 11, 2003 01:59 PM

i've heard from many places that a female crested can "turn into" a male crested overnight -- or just develop visible male parts.

so, if i had 2 juvenile cresteds housed together... and both of them turned out to be male... i'd still have to separate them. how can i tell for sure if one is going to be positively female? do i wait and sex them at 6 months of age?

thanks

From what I gather, you just have to wait and see. Also, it will take a few months longer than 6 months (from my post below) to tell for sure, and even then, they can still develop their "parts" seemingly overnight a while later. I was wondering the same thing as you and from what Ive been told, you just gotta wait. I would seperate them if they do turn out to be two males though.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Generally with cresteds you can keep multiple males together without a problem.

Oh, so it IS ok for more than one male per enclosure? Ive just read that they will fight. But if you've kept em together with no problem, i would believe your experienced advice over mine hehe.

Yes, it is ok but you would want to keep an eye on them in the begining. You just need to supply plenty of hiding places and the animals should be of equal size. Allen Repashy is the largest producer of crested in the states and he keeps multiple males and females together in almost all his enclosures. Keep in mind that aggression CAN occur. If you want to keep you gecko in PERFECT shape(keeping its tail) then it would be best to keep them seperate. In keeping my males together I have not experienced any agression.

thanks melissa & paul

since you say it's okay... then i might just go ahead and get two cresteds and see how it goes from there. i'll be sure to keep an eye out for any agression... and i wouldn't mind whether they have a tail or not - they're still cute either way the enclosure will be pretty big, enough to fit about 3 or 4 of them in there. originally it was supposed to be a regular 20 gallon tall, but i'm thinking it might even be 29 gallon tall... so there's a lot of room in case the babies happen to hatch out as male. and yes, they will be of equal size thanks for your help again! take care
