gargoyle gecko questions >>

aimee_s Dec 11, 2003 02:01 PM

i was looking for another small arboreal gecko, and was referred to gargoyle geckos by monte and jaylon (thanks guys!)

but, i was looking up care sheets and some said they like to spend most of their time on the ground... should i have less plants/branches than the crested gecko set-up? or will it work out?

thanks everyone!

Okay, maybe they're a little better at climbing than that. lol

They are definitely a lot less arboreal than Cresteds, though. One good look at their narrow toe pads will tell you that they aren't really climbers. They can't adhere to glass (at least not that I've ever seen), and even in the wild, they supposedly spend most of their time on the ground or climbing around in low shrubbery and bushes.

If you're looking for an arboreal gecko, keep looking. If you want something that's kind of in between a Crested and a Leopard, that also makes a good pet, I think Gargoyles are a good choice.

It's true that gargoyles tend to be a little less arboreal than cresteds, but there are 3 other Rhacodactylus species readily available in the pet trade that have the same care requirements as the cresteds and are very arboreal. They are R. chahoua, R. leachianus & R. sarasinorum.

I have about 7 gargoyles and all love to climb in the leaves and branches. I wouln't worry about having too much they seem to make use of anything that is offered to them. At first they may seem to not climb alot but they eventually get used to their surroundings and will explore more.

thanks for that bit of information - one of my friends that is breeding gargoyle geckos said the same exact thing, so i trust that bit of information. he said to make the cage more arboreal and you'll see them go up - but if the cage is short and long, they'll spend more time on the ground because they don't like going TOO high up - kinda like... the middle spot where nothing will find them i'm excited because i'm thinkin' of getting it still woo!
