We started making bran boxes for our beardies that liked to dig at night and sleep under or in something. Socket, one of our deformed beardies with only one eye, started digging under his substrate (non-slip padded shelf liner) and under his food dish at night. So I got the idea for a bran box. I used to use bran as a substrate but it got too messy and hard to keep clean. So why not make a sand box type box with a top to it and fill it with bran? Socket loves his bran box. Photo below....

Then I thought I'd make one for Hollywood. He loves his too! Photo below...

I just get a small cardboard box and cut an opening large enough for the beardie to get in and out, then put about an inch of bran (or a little more) on the bottom. Sometimes I catch them playing it during the day too! It's so cute!

. . . . .
You can get bran in a few different forms.... for human use and for livestock. The livestock kind is usually sold in feed stores and can harbor these little bugs that will infest your dragon enclosure if you don't freeze the bran first. I use the human kind that you can buy at a grocery store that has the bulk food items like rice, beans, flour in the bulk canisters. The wheat bran I buy is 20 cents a pound. It's really cheap. I did all of my bran boxes with less than 2 pounds of bran. Bran is soft, doesn't have an odor and the beardies love it! It's also injestible if they happen to eat it. If you have a WinCo. in your town, I know they carry it.
Hope this helps.
