Do Cyclura breeders even exist in the New England?

andrewhedlund Jun 02, 2003 09:39 PM

I can't find any, except for stores that get them from the south. I want to buy direct from the breeder. Ignorant staff take terrible care of them at pet shops, feeding them the entirely wrong diet and exposing them to parasites of all sorts. Not to mention it is more expensive.

I seriously doubt it. They aren't even legal to keep in Mass. and probably not legal in Maine as I know Green igs require a permit. As for the rest of New England it is too cold for anyone to keep them outside for most of the year. Not that breeding is impossible, but lets face it there are way less keepers of cyclura up north let alone people able to BREED them successfully.

I suggest you contact David Blair. You can access his shop at www.cyclura.com where there are pics and stuff. I got one from him sight unseen and she is lovely. I had the same problem as you here in CT.

GEtting one shipped to you is not a problem. My newest addition came all the way from CA on Delta Dash.

Tell KWE to come to White Plains! We could use a cyclura breeder!!!

I am in New England and I got my rhino from Ron St. Peirre. His were the best price that I could find. The other breeders are either MUCH more expensive or difficult to get info from.

Another point you made: I agree that pet stores are disgusting houses of death. I have seen a couple of good ones lately such as JL Breeders in East Providence, RI but almost everyother other one I'm been in is pretty bad.

People on these forums will defend pet stores veimently! They keep saying that the good ones survive and the gross ones die out. I usually see the opposite happening. The person who tries to do a good job looses business because it is obviously more profitable to neglect their livestock than to take propper care of it.

The defenders are always from other parts of the country, particularly CA. Here another New Englander is saying the same thing. It suggests that OUR pet shops suck while the rest of the country has good stuff!

I thought it was interesting.

I breed rhinos in california and have just moved to Long Island, NY. My group has been honkered down in a garage loft, waiting for all the rain and 60 degree weather to pass. Finally it is warming up. Any pointers on keeping cyclura in this undesirable climate would be appreciated.
