canebrake vomiting problem

armstronmd Dec 11, 2003 04:56 PM

Hi all,
I've had a LTC Canebrake for over 5 years, and he's always fed very well. His appetite is still great, but for the past few months he vomits every single meal after a couple days. He'll defecate part of the meal, but most of it he vomits half-digested. I've tried different food items (rats, hamsters) from different suppliers but the same thing happens. His appetite is good, his sheds look good, his behavior is the same, and the cage's temperature is reasonable. Anyone ever run into a similar problem? I haven't ruled out infection/parasites, but he's had this for quite a while now and is showing no other signs/symptoms. Thanks for the help.

Without more info, I would guess an insufficient heat gradient may be the problem, and or may have allowed a flagellate outbreak. Rattlesnakes can do an awful lot with inadequate conditions, sort of maintain themselves on the edge. If you don't already have a wide (very hot: 135 F to low 70's cool end) range of temperatures available, try that. If you do have good temps, are they set up in such a way where the snake can choose when to thermoregulate in all of them comfortably without having to lie out on the open?

If this is all good, get a stool sample to a parasitologist / vet for a thorough check. Good luck.
