New to message board and corns...

BrotherMist Dec 11, 2003 05:01 PM

I'm new here and to corn snakes as well. Just wanted to say hello and give a little info.

I've always loved snakes in general, but untill recently havent been able to have any of my own. Now I, well me and the girlfriend, have 3 corn snakes.

It started with a trip to a local pet store to find food for our eastern newt Robin. We saw a small tank with a 2 baby corns in it. An Amel and a snow. The GF fell in love with the amel and we walked out of the place with her. The next day I went back and bought the snow. We were hooked.

Since then we have learned a lot. The snow (Powder) has since passed away... even our vet cant say exactly why... and we have 2 more corns.

We visited a local convention and found Kathy Love. I wanted a Bloodred, and she had a hypo. bloodred so I naturaly had to have it. We also got a Motley from her as well.

We love our snakes and will probably end up with a bunch more. I already want a few different morphs, as dose the GF... But we figure we will give our selves time to get the hang of taking care of the ones we have before getting more of them. Kind of make sure we are going to be good snake parents.

I'll post pics of them as soon as I can.

Later!

Welcome to the forums and to the hobby. Good that your girl likes it too... that makes life easier. Sorry that you lost one of your first snakes. Unfortunately that happens far too often with pet store buys. It happened to me.
You'll see a lot of posts about keeping new snakes apart from ones that are better established and obviously healthy. I would use the same rule for now about keeping the petco one apart from the ones you got from Kathy. It's best to keep all snakes apart anyhow, but you will want to make sure that there is no unintentional cross-contamination until you are sure that the other petco snake is OK. For example...if you put a pinky in with the petco snake and it does not eat it...you might throw it away rather than put it in with either of the others. Hopefully, all of your current snakes will prove to be just fine. I'm sure Kathy's will. Good luck, and have fun. Duffy

You will get lots of good advice here. There are enough people here that most problems have been encountered before.

I would love to see photos of the little guys as they grow, especially the hypo blood, since I haven't grown up all that many of those yet.

Have fun!
Kathy Love

Sorry your snow passed, as was said before, that happens with pet store snakes sometimes, and since the amel was in the same cage with her at Pet-hell, I mean petco, then it's best to keep her away from the others for a while, maybe even get a fecal done on her to make sure she's not carrying a parasite or bacteria that killed the snow, but she's just carrying it. It happens.

Kathy has some GREAT snakes doesn't she? I have a pair of her normal bloods here, and they're starting to look more and more red with every shed. I think she said one or the other of my pair may be het hypo, and I'm sort of hoping they both are. Hypo bloods look beautiful as adults. But so do normal bloods, so I just can't wait till they get that adult coloring. Just wait till they get big enough and you decide to attempt a breeding! LOL

I got my snow in summer of 02, now I have 11 snakes, and at one time had 16. But that was before I sold some of the babies I produced and then got my 4 Love babies. These guys are ADDICTING!
Here's my snow and her first clutch of eggs:

And here's one of her babies...normal het snow:

Have fun with the new babies
