Stinky water? and croaking!

lisa197174 Dec 11, 2003 05:13 PM

I have one 2 inch Albino african clawed frog in a well filtered 10 gallon tank. I do a 25% water change every week being hes such a slob but I notice a slight odor from his water that I dont have with my fishes tank. I know im not doing anything different in the care of these two tanks so is it something they just give off from their skin? Hes healthy so im just curious. Oh and was I surprised to hear him croaking at 3:00 in the morning!! I know it sounds dumb but I really didnt think aquatic frogs did that! I thought it was something wrong with the filter and that it was creaking until I realized (duh) it was him.Any reason for doing that or is that just what they do? Thanks guys for any response.

Hi,

What do you feed him? The croaking is perfectly natural and they do it when they are heappy and healthy - well done!

I feed him Nutrafin floating pellets, they are small and he eats about 5. Half gets in his little mouth and the rest falls to the bottom, hes a very messy eater! Think the food is why? I tried giving him sinking food but he couldnt find it and the other kinds of floating food I tried dissolved to quick.

Sounds like he is healthy and looking for a mate. The males call to attract females to mate with.

The sinking food pellets may be dekaying and fouling the water. You could get a bottom feeder, like a cory cat catfish to help eat the food that you ACF misses.

Also, I feed my Africian Dwarf Frogs Tubiflex worms. They float and seem to all get eaten, rather then settle to the bottom of the tank.

Thats why I stopped using the sinking because they just dissolved at the bottom. What falls to the bottom now is pieces of the floating pellets that break off when hes shoving it in his mouth. So it could be that even though I do a 25% water change each week huh? Hes calling for a mate!!? Should I get him one or are they OK by themselves? Lisa

Hi,

You could try getting a turkey baster to suck up any uneaten food fro the bottom once he's finished eating. I wouldn't suggest a cory cat as they have a nasty barb that can choke the frog if it tries to eat it. I suggest you get him a friend, male or female as I belive these frogs enjoy company of their own kind.

Ok then my next questions would be...better to get a female being hes a male? How do you tell the difference? Do they really hang out together in the tank? Would they make babies in captivity because that I dont want really. Finally, would a ten gallon be big enough for two? He is about two inches long. Thanks for the turkey baster idea im going to try it! Lisa

Hi,

Either will do, but a female would be nice for him. If you go to my website and have a look at the section called how to tell the boys from the girls, you should be able to get an idea. (http://clawedfrogs.tripod.com). They like to sit on top of each other and will often mate, sometimes with eggs, and sometimes not. If they do have eggs then you can just leave them in the tank and the adults will eat them. A 10 gallon, in my opinion, would be ok for a pair of ACF's, but, bigger is always better.

Hope this helps,

Chris.
