Any Gaboon Viper or Side Winder owners?

Covenant Jun 02, 2003 09:54 PM

Hey all. I'm new to this side of the forum. I usally stay in the turlte forum but I have been looking into getting a venomous snake. First off I have handled venomous animals before. I work at a small zoo and have handled Gila Monsters, Mexican Beaded Lizards, different species of Rattle Snakes, and copperheads and cotton mouths. Any ways I wanted to go over to the weirder spectrum. Nothing super crazy like a mamba or any thing. I like the Gabbon Viper particuraly the rhinosourous (Spelling) version. They are so neat looking. Plus I've heard them growling before. Too cool. Or I was looking into possibly getting a sidewinder rattle snake. The place I work at had one for about a week but then got rid of it. Their also really cool looking in my opinion. What are ya'lls take on these two snakes. And are there any draw backs to keeping them compared to some thing else? Thanks.

I am a new gaboon owner, mine is a baby so i cant tell you much yet but ive been keeping C Atrox for years and mine is a very predictable and easy to keep species

If I were you I'd go with the sidewinder, be aware that they can be quick.

They might be trouble on a hook, though if you use two you should be ok. In fact if you do it right you probably won't ever need to hook them.

I've heard of sidewinders not taking mice as readily as most other Crotalus, though I believe that is mostly with neonates. Also, maybe once a week give them a little mist.

If you get bitten by a gaboon? Don't bank on the local hospital having antivenin, which is the only thing that will keep a real bite from being fatal. Don't count on being able to "borrow" the local zoo's supply either. I suggest that before you purchase an exotic snake, you look into buying the antivenin. If it turns out this is cost prohibitive, perhaps you ought to re-think the dangerous exotic.
