Tokay Keepers.......

chameleon2005 Dec 12, 2003 10:39 AM

Hello,

I am considering getting a Tokay gecko in the next few months and I have bought my books on them and surfed the net doing all my homework in advance!

What I would like to know is what size of Viv`s you guy`s use for yours, what substrate you use and If you can keep a pair in the same viv or are the only put together to breed?

Thanks In Advance

Hi,

I am no expert on tokays as I've only had my pair since October, but I'll tell you what's worked for me. I purchased a 260 gallon reptarium from LLL Reptile because I wanted to give them as much space as possible. Some people on this forum warned me against this because of humidity concerns, but I make sure humidity stays at acceptable levels by keeping a humidifier in the room and by misting 2-3 times daily. Apparently all has been well since their sheds have been trouble-free.I keep my guys together and they have become bonded. If you have a large enough enclosure, you can certainly keep a male and female together. Good luck!

I keep my 2 tokays in a 65 gallon terrarium. I'm a bit strapped for funds so I cant get anything much bigger. Idealy you would want something tall rather than wide. I use bark personally, you can get loads of it at orchard supply for very cheap.

As big as you can get. 65-70 would be mininum especially for two. You want a tall tank around 4 ft in height. I use a bark substate also with a layer of sand and gravel underneath. Two Tokays should get along fine, they are more family oriented than many Geckos. If you dont want breeding you might think about getting two females instead of a male/female, then if wanted down the road you could add a male.

I keep my 1.1 in a 20Gallon long, but I stood it on it's side (screen has a door on it so I don't have to remove the entire thing) They seem quite happy, eat for me with no probs. and the female has just laid her first egg. (and bit me when I took it away to put in the incubator lol, ouch)
