Mealies

Sarah99 Dec 12, 2003 11:31 AM

Does anybody know where I can order meal worms in smaller quanties? I bought a bunch from a company called Armstrongs at a show a few weeks ago and they were great. Only their website says they only ship in batches of 1000 at a time. I only have 2 juv leopard geckos that will eat them... and I haven't had much luck with my Whites Tree Frogs eating them so I don't need a gazillion of them... I am sure my husband would not agree to me putting a giant rubbermaid container in our refridgerator full of worms... LOL

Also... the Armstrong website says you should only order what your animals can consume in 2 weeks.. is that so? How long will Mealworms live? How long does it take for them to change?

They say '2 weeks' because that way they can sell full grown mealies and you can't complain if after 3 weeks they turn into pupae.

I've had mine for a month or so, and I just pick out the 'aliens' as they pupate. My leo will occasionally eat the pupae, but they don't move unless you touch them, so she's become bored of them. You might be able to find smaller (younger) mealies from a distributor that will last as worms for a couple months. Search google for mealworm caresheets and breeding info to see their lifespan in different stages.

BUT, if you just let them be, the bugs move around a lot and leos find freshly hatched darkling beetles to be a crunchy treat that they can chase around. Usually I just let them gorge on carrots/potatoes for a day after they emerge from the pupae state. Then they're still soft enough for a leo to easily digest, but they have the added gut-load. Just try to feed the white or brown ones. By the time they turn black, they're pretty hard. I imagine you can still feed them, but I'm using the black ones to start a mealie colony anyway.

Sorry I can't recommend a distributor. I use one out of Toronto (Canada) that's near me.

wow you are sure on this forum alot.
Just asking is the leo the only pet you have.
Not trying to make fun of you are anything. It doesn't matter if you have only one animal, as long as you love and care about it.

Nobody should be judged by how many pets they have. I only have one leopard gecko also. Pets are kind of expensive. We cant all afford 15 or 20 pets.

i agree with gex53 - pets are pretty expensive... i'm on this forum a lot and i only have one leo. i don't come here just to find info on helping my leo.. i try helping out other people too and communicating with some of the pretty cool people that are on here. i've seen you around on this forum a lot too one of my friends has 20 leos and only comes to this forum once in a blue moon

Well, I check it regularly during the week. I'm quite bored at work, so I'll give it a check on breaks.

I never check it in the evenings or weekends though. Too much going on socially. Gotta get out while I'm still young (22-university student).

Yeah, I've only got the one leo for now. I move every 4 months between school and co-op, so I'm limited. I'd like other things, but landlords aren't cool with much more.

I've got a dog back at my parents place. He's a 10 year old Airedale Terrier (Max), but I only see him every month or so. He'll be getting quite the series of walks over the xmas break.

I've been on a lot lately because there has been some nonsense going on with retards posting swastikas, pics of dead animals, and such. I figure that the people on this forum have helped me a tonne, so I'm not going to let tools post crap without a response.

you can order more than what your animals consume in 2 weeks by letting them hibernate in your refrigerator. if you keep them out in room temp, they'll pupate in several weeks. so, you can order more - just make sure they're in really cold temps. take as much mealies from your fridge as your animals can eat in a day, let them thaw and gutload 24 hours before feeding - so you have nutritious, freshly gutloaded mealworms for your animals without the worry of quick alien morphing. they will still morph, but not as fast as if they were not in the refrigerator.

also, if you go to: www.AmericanCricketRanch.com, they sell mini, small, and regular sized mealies in a container of 500. you can also try www.BCRcricket.com, they sell mealies in 50, 100, and 500 prepacked cups. i'd advise you not to get the 50 cup though, because my ONE leo can eat through that in less than a week hehe~ although i haven't ordered online yet, i've heard very good comments and recommendations about those companies. you can do a poll or a survey in the forum if you'd like

good luck and have fun take care!

I order mine from www.grubco.com You can get them in 50 cups but there's a minimum of 12 cups if you go that route. Thats 600 mealies and my leo eats almost all of them before they morph.
