Sick Snake Question

dackerschott Dec 12, 2003 12:01 PM

Hello, I am new to the forum but I have a few questions. A neighbor of mine gave me a female jungle carpet to care for. The snake had a horrible shed and the from what it looks like recieved thermal burnes on her belly scales, When I got her from him I soaked her in water and the old skin came off but her belly scales were red, no visible dripping blood. She is acting fine but yesterday she shed again and the area that was red is now gone, the belly scales ae missing?? has anyone seen this, she seems to be acting ok. Any input is greatly appreciated as I have never had a jungle carpet before. Thanks David

I've seen snakes shed off damaged scales. They do grow back just fine, but it may take a few sheds down the line. I suggest putting a little Neosporin on the raw area initially, and using a paper substrate while it heals. I know mistakes can happen, but I hope the previous owner has the brains to use a thermostat or controller.

Something similar happend to a Dumerils that I purchased. My advice to you is to keep her cage immaculately clean. I'd use cage liners if you can get some. Reason being is you want to lessen the risk of infections and irratents. So anything with little particuls, sharp edges, or chemicals she can absorb through her bare skin are completely out. Neosporin is good, Betodine is good too. Otherwise just be aware and don't hesitate to take her to a herp vet if she starts showing signs of sickness. Best of luck!
