Help! Hibernating wild gray tree frog!

SarahRuss Dec 12, 2003 05:10 PM

Hi,
My father found a wild gray tree frog in hibernation. The little guy was under a log, and my dad didn't know he was under it. I can't put him back because his home is destroyed. It's going to be in the low 30's high 20's tonight. Should I keep him temporarily? Or release him? If I do end up keeping him, how do I take care of him?
Sarah

I would keep him. Letting him go in this weather would be deadly in minutes.
For basic care, I'd get a 10-gallon aquarium and put in a few inches of substrate (shredded coconut fiber is best. You can buy it at most pet stores in a brick form, and you add water and it expands into a soillike substance.)
You could feasably hibernate it indoors in a cool place, like a garage or basement, as long as it is not subzero. Put in enough substrate for the frog to bury under. In the spring, you could re-release him. I will write more later when I have more time, but i just wanted to offer some quick info!

Hi,
Thank you! I already did all that. I used leaves instead of coconut fiber though, is that alright? My parents and I were worried that we had ruined his/her life when we brought him/her inside. He/she seems to be hibernating.
Thanks,
Sarah

That sounds good. In the wild, they would bury under leaves. I would definately not let the frog go until Spring arrives! One good way to know when, is when you hear this type of frog start to call outdoors.
Good luck!
