To make a hide simply buy a tuber ware container about3-4inches high and as wide and long as you want usualy around 6-4inches and cut a whole in the lid with a steack nife about 2.5inches around then take a lighter or some thing and melt were you cut the hole so it wont be sharp ad water and perlite boom hide

Perlite's made of a volcanic glass, so you probably don't want to risk having your leo ingest any. It's not unusual for a leo to lick the drops of moisture while they're inside the humid hide, so don't think it's not possible for them to pick up any bits of perlite.

For a humid hide, I wouldn't go with vermiculite either.

You can buy peat moss for less than $3 at Home Depot.

3.2.3 leopard geckos (Rosie, Locke, Lisa, Caesar, Tommy)

Some leos will eat it on purpose. I tried it with my babies once (big mistake). I picked up one of the little guys and could feel it crunching around inside her stomach. Miraculously, she managed to successfully expell it and is doing great. But, I'll never use it in hides again.

I agree with Xelda, peat moss is a much better choice.

I don't disagree with Aaronhoare but i would caution against using a steak knife. Any small pair of scissors will work. My concern is that in cutting through the thin plastic of the cottage cheese, margerine, sour cream etc. containers with a knife poses a risk of it slipping. I've cut many a container with an aray of tools and i do have all my fingers......but i've had my share of nasty cuts. Besides i'm sure your mom would not be impressed dulling her knives Also i'm not sure how many people cut holes in the top but i've found with my smaller geckos that a hole just up from the bottom on the side is just as good, granted i use papertowels not perlite.

Hey,

I got this tip of ron tremper the reason for putting the hole on the top is so the geckos cant kick out the substrate if its kicked out it could be eaten from there by a cricket that latched on or a mealworm or whatever also I use vermiculite, perlite, spaghnum moss, peat moss, everthing i just find that females espically mine perfer the perlite hides ive tested it ive put 4 types of hides in a cage and they all go to perlite I also had a spaghnum moss hide that the female was gravid and egg bound in so I put in a perlite hide as well as leaving the previous hide and the next morning after a week of being egg bound she had the eggs in the perlite Just my opoion.

I completely understand the reason for the hole on the top. I just figured since my guys were so tiny that holes in the sides would be easier and i don't use loose substrate, just papertowels. Most of my guys like to climb and i'd be worried that they would topple over the humid hide if they had to climb on it. Just last night Dot was playing on her toilet roll when it rolled over and she was under it......funny to see but i'm sure she didn't think so LOL

I dont disagree with putting the hole on the top though. Just wanted to make sure that using a knife was done safely and suggest other ways to cut the hole
