Male combat

tony88snake2002 Dec 12, 2003 10:21 PM

I`ve put 2 poss het for pied males (bros)in with 3 females.I took them out and back in with no problems .But,when I decided to run my het albino(snakekeeper`s) to what I call my Axanthic group.Which consist of 0.1 WC Axanthic ,her 1.1 offspring, and 0.1 big momma. The Ball python in the pic.Anyways,as soon as I put the het in there the other male turned into a Cobra. He(homophobic) started wrestling every other snake in there .Then, to my dismay he bit the het.Ofcourse @ that point I seperated the males and looked them over .I didn`t see any damage.I `ve heard of this ,now I`ve seen and believe it .Just thought I`d share .Thank`s,Tony

i thought you were supposed to have a 1:1 ratio until you see them copulating, then switch after a week (change the female the male is with) ?? or was this a "test" group?

tony88snake2002 Dec 13, 2003 09:50 AM

I don`t know about that ? The only 1.1 ratio I`m doing this year is het to poss albino female and ringers. That way I`ll be sure of the daddy.I`ve got clutches the last two years.I`m always up for info.I never wanna stop learning.Thank`s,Tony

im pretty sure if you want to prove out your poss het a het, you should breed it to a albino , or a normal, and then breed it back to the daddy. i dont see why you put 2 males in the same cage?

tony88snake2002 Dec 13, 2003 07:24 PM

Why put two males with females ? To stimulate breeding,to produce double het? I`ve heard of other breeders doing it.

im not sure thats how they do it (i may be wrong though)...heres the way i thought they did it.

Put an albino in with a normal.
that should produce 100% hets
then breed those to another 100% het animal

the offspring of those snakes should be Het for albino and het for somthing else. Im pretty sure your going to get hurt snakes.

Hi Tony –

There were quite a few individuals in your story, so I just want to make sure I got it right. Your male het (for albino?) bit another het (for ?) male, or did he bite a female? Could you clarify?

Is that you in the photo? That’s a great looking snake! Have you ever weighed or tried to measure her?

Thanks for posting that information about the combat. I have not personally witnessed biting between ball pythons. I appreciate hearing about such things. I’m not a huge fan of requiring male snakes to duke it out in our typical captive situations. I previously posted a few of my reasons for that here (forums.kingsnake.com/viewarch.php?id=133965,135916&key=2003).

By the way, I don’t think I’d call that male “homophobic.” Sounds like he’s just a big-time heterophile.

The whole thing about this post is .I observed this in one out of five males. This one male bit the other male one time .Before I took him out.
