Boid guy having problems with kingsnake

nightvip Dec 13, 2003 12:12 AM

So got a king snake that was eating pretty good. Both thawd and live. Well it hasn't eat'n in a month now after eating every week for 3 months. Thought he was having an extended shed cycle and that might have been it, but he has shed now and no luck now 3 refusals. So do I just act like I would with my pythons and boas that are problem feeds or do I do anything different with the king.

Forgot was feeding it mice nonscents...is captive breed snake.

Sounds like he/she may be brumating, or at least trying to. If not brumated artificially by us a lot of them will do it on their own anyway. Maybe this snake was used to being brumated by now and is just repeating it's pattern? Can you perhaps get a hold of the breeder/former owner and ask them?

May I ask what the living conditions, temps, etc are? How old is this snake and appx size?
Is it showing any signs of ill health, which of course would be very similar to pretty much any boid's sickly symptoms?

Unless it's showing any 'off' signs or is getting very thin I certainly wouldn't force-feed at this point, at least not without providing us with the info above first.
GL and thanks!

Most likely it's internal clock is saying it's time to brumate. Sometimes you just can't control what is natural. Even with the right temps, amount of daylight, etc.
Unless you see a significant loss in weight, let it brumate. Make sure it's digestive system is empty, a warm water bath can help with this. Provide water, extra bedding so it can burrow under, and lower the temps to the mid 50's. You can cool for 60-90 days total. When you bring it out from cooling, raise the temps slowly over 1-2 weeks. You will see a real big difference in feeding response.

My cal king male is close to 6 feet and 4 years old and hasnt eaten for 1.5 month. He's very active at night and wants a lot of attention. In 1.5 month he only loose 5 grams of weight of the 755 grams he weight showing no ill signs. Im expecting him to start eating again in like 1 pr 2 month or so. As long he isnt losing a lot of weight and showing ill sings i doubt you have to worry.

Greets,

Michiel
